COUNSELLING IN LEDBURY AND ONLINE

Healing Through Compassion

Welcome to Calluna Counselling

How might therapy with me help?

Are you feeling stressed, anxious, or depressed? Stuck in negative patterns of thinking and behaviour? Or perhaps you are trying to find resolution and peace with relationship difficulties. Maybe you are dealing with a loss, an unexpected life change, or are struggling to control your emotions.

Whatever it is that you wish to explore, I offer a safe and confidential space, where you will feel truly heard and understood. My aim is to support you in processing painful feelings, and in developing new skills that will empower you to make choices and choose solutions that are right for you.

As a humanistic and integrative therapist, registered with the BACP, I have experience working therapeutically with adults and young people in schools, charity organisations and in private practice. I have worked across a wide range of issues, which include, but are not limited to depression, anxiety, relationship problems, low self-esteem, anger management, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts.

My approach to counselling

My approach draws mainly on the following therapeutic models. Person-Centred therapy: based on the principle that you already have the capacity to self-heal. Psychodynamic therapy: examines how your past experiences have shaped your outlook on life today.

I am committed to helping you explore and understand yourself better through a journey of self-discovery. I will not judge you, nor will I give you advice. I believe that only you can figure out what is best for you; but I will work alongside you to help you reflect and find solutions that lead you to find a way forward.

I offer face-to-face counselling for adults and young people (age 13 +) at my accessible, Herefordshire-based practice room in Ledbury, or online sessions via Zoom.

I also offer ‘Walk and Talk’ therapy for anyone who may feel anxious at the thought of a one-to-one session in a room, or for those who simply prefer the idea of having therapy outdoors. PERSON-CENTRED THERAPY

Client or person-centred therapy comes under the humanistic umbrella, and humanistic psychology believes we all contain untapped potential. This approach focuses on maximising your ability to find solutions with the right amount of support.

PSYCHODYNAMIC THERAPY

This therapy aims to create fundamental change in your emotional development by helping you understand and resolve your problems, and by increasing your awareness of your inner self and how this can influence your relationships.

SOLUTION-FOCUSED BRIEF THERAPY

SFBT is a short-term, goal-focused, evidence-based, therapeutic approach to help clients bring about change by constructing solutions rather than focusing on problems.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the therapy practice located?

I work from a lovely, quiet, and accessible room located in the centre of Ledbury, Herefordshire. There are two public car parks nearby and Ledbury train station is a 10-minute walk away.

I also offer outdoor one-to-one Walk and Talk therapy, which takes places in nearby Eastnor Deer Park. Parking there is free, and there are toilets and a cafe on site. To find out more about the benefits of this type of therapy visit: https://www.choosingtherapy.com/walk-and-talk-therapy/.

How do I know if I need counselling?

Sometimes, life can become challenging and feel overwhelming. When you think you're struggling and can no longer cope or move forward, it’s good to ask for help. Counselling is a gentle and effective process where we work collaboratively and confidentially, at a comfortable pace for you.

How do online sessions work?

Online video counselling sessions take place via Zoom, a highly effective way to undergo therapy and offer the ultimate convenience. Find a quiet space to be reflective, uninterrupted, and comfortable with good Wifi. We agree on a day and a time; then, you are sent a Zoom link to log in before the session starts. To book an appointment contact me via email heather@callunacounselling.co.uk or by completing the contact form.

Can someone be with me during our session?

It's normal to feel nervous before you start counselling, especially if it's your first time. Our sessions are one-to-one sessions for us to develop a strong relationship based on trust. That way, we build a relationship in a safe and confidential space where you can talk openly and freely.

Is an integrative humanistic approach effective?

Integrative humanistic counselling is a highly flexible and adaptable approach to therapy, because it is entirely tailored to your specific issues and goals. And although I draw upon different modalities during our sessions, you will take the lead, as I guide and support you through your therapeutic journey.

How long and how often do I expect to undergo counselling?

I offer short-term therapy focused on specific issues and open-ended therapy where we can work together for as long as it is helpful to you. We usually start with six sessions, then we review. We book most sessions weekly or fortnightly to build momentum, enabling you to make gradual and steady progress towards your goals. Each session builds on the last, so keeping sessions frequent allows you to progress more quickly. We agree on a convenient time and day for these sessions with flexibility on appointments.

Do I need a referral from my GP to book an appointment?

You are free to access counselling whenever you need extra support and do not need a referral from your GP. Please get in touch with me directly. To book an appointment contact me via email heather@callunacounselling.co.uk or by completing the contact form.

How will I feel after my therapy sessions?

Try to create some quiet time for yourself after each counselling session to reflect. It is common to feel a range of emotions during counselling, which may continue after your sessions finish. Often, it is liberating and a relief to talk openly and feel heard or understood. Sometimes, you may feel upset if a session has brought up painful or difficult memories. So, it can be helpful to find a peaceful space after your session ends.

What happens during my first session?

During our initial session, we have an in-depth assessment about what brings you to counselling, with more detailed discussions on your background life experiences and what is affecting you in the present day. You’ll be encouraged to speak freely and openly about any of your concerns.

Is counselling confidential?

Everything you discuss during your sessions is confidential. There are only two exceptions to this where I am obliged to break confidentiality: if you disclose involvement in or knowledge of any criminal activities or if there is a safeguarding issue if you or any adult, or child related to you could potentially be under threat of harm or abuse.
